The locking device has a lock mechanism (1) designed for the ascertaining of the type of key mechanism (8,9) and for the supply of an appropriate signal of the type of key (11) to the key mechanism (2) so that the key mechanism of the cover is operatable depending upon the signal of the type of key. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) Rear backrest or loading mechanism; (B) Trunk compartment, rear window, glove compartment; and (C) Method for locking and unlocking of the cover of the storage space.
