<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery suppressing the growth of dendrites of metal lithium producing by reduction of lithium ions. <P>SOLUTION: The negative electrode 3 for the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery has metal lithium layer 10 and a covering layer 11 formed on at least one surface of the metal lithium layer 10. The covering layer 11 contains material 12 high in performance for forming a lithium compound and through which lithium ions are passed. The metal lithium is preferably contained more than 100% to the saturated reversible capacity of the material 12 high in performance for forming the lithium compound.
