<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarizing plate which is formed by utilizing a combination of a thin film that reflects light selectively and a birefringent thin film, has a simple structure and is easily manufactured with a low cost. <P>SOLUTION: The polarizing plate comprises a thin film that reflects light selectively and a birefringent thin film. The birefringent thin film is formed on the thin film that reflects light selectively. It is preferable that the birefringent thin film exhibits the Nz value (Nz=(nx-nz)/(nx-ny)) in a range from -0.1 to -5.0 where nx is a refractive index in a direction of slow axis of the birefringent thin film, ny is a refractive index in a direction of fast axis thereof and nz is a refractive index in a thickness direction thereof. It is preferable that one selected from a group consisting of polycarbonate, triacetyl cellulose, metallocene cycloolefin copolymer and polymer foaming material is used for the birefringent film.
