<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarizing plate which is formed by utilizing a combination of a thin film that reflects light selectively and a birefringent thin film, has a simple structure and is easily manufactured with a low cost. <P>SOLUTION: The polarizing plate comprises a thin film that reflects light selectively and a birefringent thin film. The birefringent thin film is formed on the thin film that reflects light selectively. It is preferable that the birefringent thin film exhibits the Nz value (Nz=(nx-nz)/(nx-ny)) in a range from -0.1 to -5.0 where nx is a refractive index in a direction of slow axis of the birefringent thin film, ny is a refractive index in a direction of fast axis thereof and nz is a refractive index in a thickness direction thereof. It is preferable that one selected from a group consisting of polycarbonate, triacetyl cellulose, metallocene cycloolefin copolymer and polymer foaming material is used for the birefringent film. According to the polarizing plate, the problem of color shifts to red at a wide viewing angle of the liquid crystal display can be solved. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
