PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain good focusing performance over the whole surface of a phosphor screen by diminishing the horizontal magnification of a main lens as compared with a conventional one, and by reducing the horizontal diameter of an electron beam spot. SOLUTION: The main lens of an electron gun is, along the advancing direction of three electron beams, composed of a focus electrode G3 to which a focus voltage is applied, at least one intermediate electrode GM to which a voltage higher than the focus voltage is applied, and an anode electrode G4 to which an anode voltage higher than the intermediate voltage is applied. The main lens has a plurality of focusing regions and the plurality of diverging regions in the center axial direction, and the strongest focusing electric field and the strongest diverging electric field are formed by the intermediate electrode, and the strongest electric field is formed on the focus electrode side with respect to the strongest focusing electric field.
