PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a practical method of manufacturing carbon onion more simply and inexpensively than before by an easy technique. SOLUTION: The carbon onion is synthesized on an iron group or iron group alloy base body which is a catalyst by using, as a raw material gas, a single gas or a gaseous mixture having an elemental composition containing C and H as primary components or a single gas or a gaseous mixture having an elemental composition containing C, O and H as primary components and activating the gas with heating or discharge plasma.
