A composition comprises an intimate and uniform mixture of a powdered organic thermoplastic material the size of the particles of which in absolute value does not exceed 0.25 mm. with 0.5 to 75% and preferably 15 to 40% of its weight of a mineral material such as: glass, quartz, ceramic, or asbestos, in the form of fibres with a length of 0.1 to 30 mm. and having a section of any desired form which is inscribed in a circle with a diameter between 0.1 and 50 microns. The preferred mineral fibres are glass fibres which may be oiled with chromium chloromethacrylate or de-oiled with benzene before use. Other fibres exemplified are asbestos and ceramic aluminium silicate fibres. Organic thermoplastic materials exemplified are low pressure and high pressure polyethylenes; polypropylene; polystyrene; polytetrafluoroethylene; polyamides produced by the polycondensation of (1) 11-aminoundecanoic acid; (2) adipic acid and hexamethylene diamine, or (3) caprolactam; polycarbonate; polyacetal; and cellulose acetobutyrate. Of the conventional additives that may be incorporated titanium dioxide, cadmium sulphide, molybdenum disulphide, and graphite are exemplified. The composition may be extruded and cut into granules prior to moulding by conventional techniques.
