PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light detecting element which can accurately detect an optical signal from an optical fiber. SOLUTION: A photodiode 1 comprises a light detecting region for holding an optical fiber F, and for detecting an optical signal issued from the end of the optical fiber F. In the photodidode, a recess 12 made thin in its thickness direction is provided in a location opposed to the light detecting region, the recess 12 has a cross-sectional diameter smaller than the optical fiber F in the vicinity of the light detecting region, and the end of the optical fiber can be guided even into the vicinity of the light detecting region.
