Oil separator for deoiling crankcase vent gas in an internal combustion engine, comprising separation chambers (12, 14, 16), a gas inlet (32) connected to the crankcase, oil outlets (30) and gas outlets (24, 26, 28), comprises sensors (34) for measuring the loading of the separation chambers and valves (36) for controlling the flow of gas from the inlet in response to the sensors. An independent claim is also included for deoiling deoiling crankcase vent gas in an internal combustion engine by providing a sensor to measure the loading of an oil separator and closing a gas inlet of the separator on reaching a threshold loading.
