A display apparatus suitable for use with an instrument panel. The display panel comprises a display panel, which has a plurality of pixels each of which modulates a light, and a directly underlying backlight that is disposed on the rear side of the display panel. The backlight has a plurality of light sources (1A,1B,1C,1D) and a control circuit (30A) that controls the brightness of the plurality of light sources. The control circuit can cause at least two of the plurality of light sources (1A,1B,1C,1D) to exhibit mutually different brightness.
