Cellulose fibres are treated with an aqueous solution containing not more than 4% sodium hydroxide and then reacted with 0,1-5% ethylene oxide, based on the dry weight of the cellulose. Preferably, 1% to 3% sodium hydroxide solution is used at from 5 DEG -50 DEG C., and less than 3%, preferably about 1% ethylene oxide substitution is effected by reaction at from 20 DEG -90 DEG C. under conditions such that 50% conversion efficiency is attained. The product is fibrous, exhibits improved whiteness stability on exposure to heat and light, and is substantially insoluble in 5% sodium hydroxide solution. U.S.A. Specification 2,614,102 is referred to. |
