A plurality of control curves P<SUB>1</SUB>, P<SUB>2</SUB>, d<SUB>1</SUB>, d<SUB>2 </SUB>are provided as boundary conditions to a partial differential equation. At least one of the boundary conditions is defined as a function of time t. Solving the partial differential equation with respect to the time-variant boundary conditions provides a surface patch of a 3D object which changes over time. A time-variant spine S may also be provided which coordinates manipulation of the control curves, thereby providing a time-based animation of the PDE surface patch.
