A projector (12) has a lamp / bulb (20) and a cooling fan (28). A control system (32) is interfaced with the lamp and the fan, the control system being able to operate the cooling fan for variable period of time after the lamp is switched off. The control system may be connected to one or more thermocouples (34) that measure the temperature of a housing (30). The control system may set the fan to operate at a maximum speed to cool the housing in a minimum time or at prolonged cooling rate to extend the life of the lamp. The control system may have a timer (36) to measure the period that the lamp is in the on position and how long the cooling fan is operating. The control system may adjust the length of time the fan is on dependant upon the duration that the lamp is lit corresponding to values contained in a table (38). |
