Acrylonitrile is prepared by contacting acrolein, ammonia, oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas and optionally an inert diluent gas at elevated temperature with a catalyst consisting of at least one arsenite and/or arsenate of an element less electronegative than arsenic, such as Fe, Bi, Cd, Al, Ca, Mg, Zn, Sn, Zr, Cr, Co, Pb, Ni, Mn, Sb, V, Cu, B, Mo and W. Carriers may be used for the catalyst.ALSO:Arsenites and/or arsenates of elements less electronegative than arsenic are prepared by the action of arsenic acids on said elements or a salt, oxide or hydroxide thereof, or by double decomposition reactions. The products, useful as catalysts for acrylonitrile production (see Division C2), may be activated or stabilized by treatment at various temperatures in the presence of air, ammonia, steam or mixtures thereof. Specified elements are Fe, Bi, Cd, Al, Ca, Mg, Zn, Sn, Zr, Cr, Co, Pb, Ni, Mn, Sb, V, Cu, B, Mo and W.ALSO:Catalysts for acrylonitrile production (see Division C2) consist of at least one arsenite and/or arsenate of an element less electronegative than arsenic, which catalysts may contain an excess of an arsenic oxide or oxide of the said element, and which may be supported, e.g. on pumice stone, colloidal silica, alumina or carborundum. The catalysts may be activated or stabilized by treatment at various temperatures in the presence of air, ammonia, steam or mixtures thereof. Specified elements are Fe, Bi, Cd, Al, Ca, Mg, Zn, Sn, Zr, Cr, Co, Pb, Ni, Mn, Sb, V, Cu, B, Mo and W. |
