A fixture and method for replacing brake spiders on heavy duty vehicle a nd truck axles includes providing a fixture having a cylindrical body with a fl at surface and internal bores slightly larger than the bearing surfaces on the axle having a damaged brake spider. The fixture also includes two longitudinally oriented and moveable guides or fingers which can be secured to the body. The method comprises the steps of determining a reference distance between a feature of the axle and the brake spider which may be facilitated by positioning the fixtur e on a vehicle axle and adjusting and securing the pair of fingers to record the reference distance. The fixture is then removed and the damaged spider is removed from the axle with, for example, an oxy-acetylene torch. Next, a new spider is temporarily attached to the fixture, the spider and fixture are placed on the axle with the fixture against the axle shoulder and the fingers are adjusted, if necessary, to locate the replacement spider at the previously determined reference distance. The spid er is then tack welded to the axle, the fixture is removed and the spider is securely welded to the axle. The brake components may then be reassembled to the spider. |
