A shoe provides a sole under the ball of the foot but none below the arch or heel. An upper encircles the matatarsal bones and the distal end of the tarsals. An inelastic ankle band shaped as a "c" holds the shoe on the foot. Support is mainly longitudinal, includes over the arch, may be adjustable and is provided without causing foot distortion. Sensation from exposed parts of the foot promotes kinaesthetic procedures for teaching and learning dance. Variations enclose the dorsal part of the foot, some enclose the toes, and one option is a toe box for en pointe.
