The tag has a plate (10) whose face comprises a display zone (11) carrying a code word for identification of an animal. A fixation wire (12) is provided for subcutaneous fixation of the tag on the animal. The wire has a terminal section (13) with a locking section (15) moving between an insertion position for traversing two layers of skin-fold, and a maintenance position for extending along a direction transversal to the section (13). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for reading an identification tag (2) a method of implanting an identification tag.
