<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a position information provision system capable of effectively providing information about the periphery of a present spot on which a user is positioned by a comparatively simple configuration. <P>SOLUTION: In this position information provision system, an important spot of a sidewalk of a shopping district is provided with a road surface material 3 displaying a two-dimensional code Q. Spot information, place name information, and connection information are recorded in the two-dimensional code Q, and the upper direction thereof is set such that the upper direction accords with the north direction. The position information provision system is provided with an information provision server 2 having a database storing map data of the whole shopping district, spot-related information such as store information, and the spot information of the two-dimensional code Q. The user present in the shopping district photographs the two-dimensional code Q of the nearby road surface material 3 by a camera of a cellphone 1. The cellphone 1 decodes the two-dimensional code Q, automatically accesses the information provision server 2 on the basis of data of the connection information, and transmits the spot information and reading direction information.
