<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gate operation method, in which automatic and manual operation methods are easy to switchover, especially operation methods for combined or slide gates. <P>SOLUTION: A position detector (6) is provided to detect the turning direction of a drive wheel (6) and its revolutionary frequency via pulse, and store the position detection related data in a nonvolatile memory taking account of the turning direction. A data processing unit is provided to store various variable action programs, and these action programs include a learning program in addition to a safety related program. The learning program stores the standard values detectable by the position detector (6) and used for an arbitrarily definable and variable gate release position (20), an absolutely release end position (21) limited by a stopper and a gate close position (19) in another nonvolatile memory.
