PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a passenger detector of an elevator capable of preventing any improper operation by allowing a light emission device of a first photoelectric device to emit light by using a polarizing plate in two photoelectric devices, and crossing the axes of polarization to be used between the two photoelectric devices, and allowing the light from the first device not to be received because the polarized light is blocked by the polarizing plate of different direction of the axis mounted on a light-receiving means even when the polarized light reaches a second light-receiving means. SOLUTION: The passenger detector comprises a first photoelectric device consisting of a first light-emitting means 4 consisting of a first light-emitting device and a first light-emission side polarizing plate, and a first light-receiving means 6 consisting of a first light-receiving element and a first light-reception side polarizing plate having the axis of polarization coaxial with that of the first light emission side polarizing plate, and a second photoelectric device consisting of a second light-emitting means 5 consisting of a second light emission element and a second light emission side polarizing plate, and a second light-receiving means 7 consisting of a second light-receiving device and a second light reception side polarizing plate having the axis of polarization being coaxial with that of the second light emission side polarizing plate. The first photoelectric device and the second photoelectric device are arranged so that the axis of polarization of the first photoelectric device is across that of the second photoelectric device to detect presence/absence of any user.
