PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a workpiece holding device accurately detecting a state wherein a workpiece is held in a regular posture. SOLUTION: The workpiece holding device has a workpiece holding head 2 for holding the workpiece 1. The workpiece holding head has a reception shape part 20b receiving and holding the workpiece corresponding to the regular holding of the workpiece 1. The workpiece holding head is also provided with a detection member 41, which is moved along with the reception of the holding of the workpiece, and regular holding detection means 31, 32 continuously detecting the detection member 41 moved corresponding to the regular holding of the workpiece. It is accurately detected whether the workpiece is regularly held or not. The falling of the workpiece is also detected. When operation for press-fitting the held workpiece to the reception side is executed, the workpiece is not press-fitted in an irregular posture, and the workpiece is prevented from flowing to a post-process without being press-fitted.
