The method involves regulating a fuel injection device (10) by using a piezo-electric actuator (14) for activating and terminating of injection of fuel into a combustion chamber (12). Control parameter in form of reference values is generated and transferred to an output stage controller (20) over a serial peripheral interface (18) in a burst mode for operation of the actuator in a controlling and/or regulating device. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a computer program for execution of a method for operating a fuel injection device of an internal combustion engine (B) a controlling and regulating device for an internal combustion engine.
