This invention provides a decorative material, which is showy and, at the same time, is lightweight and has excellent weathering resistance, is free from an allergy to the skin, has a photocatalytic function, and is suitable as a material for jewels, and a process for producing the same. A base material (2) is cleaned with a neutral detergent and is degreased with an alkaline solution. Next, the base material (2) is pickled with a well-known inorganic acid, organic acid, or inorganic base solution. The base material (2) on its one side is then coated with a hot-melt adhesive, and the coating is dried. In this stage, an oxide film is formed on the base material (2) in its side not coated with the hot-melt adhesive. When the color of the oxide film is desired, subsequent anodization treatment is not carried out. A desired shape can be provided by well-known machining. When various types of coloring are contemplated, a method is adopted in which the base material (2) to be treated is connected to an anode and is immersed in an electrolysis solution, and a voltage of 0 V to 120 V is applied. The treatment time is about 1 to 100 sec.
