<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image forming apparatus, capable of yielding satisfactory color images by always realizing satisfactory transfer conditions in the secondary transfer, regardless of the toner adhesive amount of a color toner image. <P>SOLUTION: The color image forming apparatus is equipped with a color toner image forming means for successively primarily transferring different color toner images formed electrostatically on a plurality of image carriers through a developing stage under a set specified developing conditions to an intermediate transfer body and secondarily transferring the formed color toner image to a transfer material; a pre-secondary-transfer destaticizing means provided on farther downstream side than a primary transfer area in the moving direction of the intermediate transfer body and on farther upstream side than a secondary transfer means, and having a discharge electrode which imparts charge, having a reverse polarity to the toner and a grid electrode to which voltage having the same polarity as the toner is applied; and a density detection means for detecting the density of the toner image on the image carrier.
