PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a lap joint which is not broken with tension force that is smaller than original raw material strength. SOLUTION: In the method for forming a lap joint, two materials 1 and 2 to be joined are combined such that they partially overlap each other, then a probe 5 of a friction stir welding tool 3 is rotated and inserted into the overlapped portion of two materials 1 and 2 to be joined from the material 1 side on which tension force is applied after joining, and then the probe 5 is moved along the overlapped portion. Both materials 1 and 2 to be joined are joined by friction stir welding in such a manner that a tension force applied portion of the material 1, into which the probe 5 is inserted, is arranged so as to come to the side where a front of a rotating direction X of the probe 5 conforms to a moving direction Y of the probe 5.
