PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an absolute angle detection apparatus having a resolution of 1.5°or less and of an easily handleable common divisor of 360°and applicable to a multi-rotation body. SOLUTION: The absolute angle detection apparatus includes a rotary disc 1, rows 2 and 3 of code patterns provided for the surface of the rotary disc 1, a plurality of detection elements 4-8 and 11-13 opposed to the rows 2 and 3 of code patterns, a spiral guide groove 17 formed in the back surface of the rotary disc 1, and a position detector 18 in which an operator 18a is engaged with the spiral guide groove 17. Gray codes acquired by a plurality of combinations of codes supplied from the plurality of detection elements 4-8 and 11-13 are made to be circular gray codes. The amount of rotation of the rotating disc of one rotation or more is detected on the basis of signals corresponding to the position of movement of the operator 18a supplied from the position detector 18.
