PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hoisting machine for an elevator capable of maintaining the friction coefficient of a brake lining at a consistent value. SOLUTION: The hoisting machine comprises a drive sheave with a main rope to hang a car of the elevator being wound therearound, a brake drum 1 to be turned interlockingly with the drive sheave, a brake lining 2 arranged facing a braking face of the brake drum, a pressing tool which is arranged within a groove 16 formed in the braking face of the brake drum, and urged against an opening side of the groove while a part thereof is protruded from the braking face of the brake drum, and a grinding unit which is provided on a protruded part of the pressing tool to grind the braking face of the brake lining when braking the drive sheave.
