A character string generating device for generating a code enabling the user to easily copying even coded information by using characters with which the user can tell the coded content to another person by mouth and capable of being read by a reader such as a scanner at high speed and for generating a character string symbol composed of character strings. The character sting generating device comprises converting means for generating a character string from numerical information, symbol character inserting means for inserting a corner symbol character at the first and last potions and a predetermined intermediate positions of the character string generated by the converting means, character string dividing means for dividing the character string into which the corner symbol characters are inserted by the symbol character inserting means into character strings, and character string symbol generating means for arranging the character strings divided by the character string dividing means into a rectangular shape and generating a character string symbol in which the corner symbol characters are arranged at the four corners of the rectangular character string.
