<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a levelling actuator that can be easily incorporated into an outer housing of a headlight by shortening its length. <P>SOLUTION: This headlight for an automobile is provided with a lighting system 16, and the levelling actuator 24 provided on an inner housing 54 to change the direction of an optical beam to an axial line L1 by controlling the rotation of the lighting system to an outer housing. The levelling actuator is pivotally attached to the lighting system at a forward end 28, and provided with a lengthwise rod 26 that is moved electrically by an electric drive 34, and manually by a pair of gears 36. The gears are provided with a control pinion 40 held perpendicularly or obliquely to the rod by a control shaft 44 extended from a circumferential wall 46 of the outer housing.
