PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a select assist device for an automatic transmission capable of enlarging a degree of freedom in layout by miniaturizing a select lever while permitting range switching operation in fail by mechanical connection of the select lever and a select position switching device, and providing select lever control force characteristics according to demand. SOLUTION: A controller 3 comprises an intermediate stop determining portion 35 for determining that an operating position is stopped at an intermediate position between a select stop position and a select stop position, a target position setting portion 34 for setting a target position of a working position from the operating position and keeping an intermediate stop state as an ordinary state, and a driving command value operating portion 32 for operating a driving command value to make the working position close to the target position.
