Process for fixing pigments on fibrous materials and foils

Terephthalic acid-bis-alkyleneimides of formula in which R1-R4 are hydrogen aroms or methyl groups, are prepared by adding an organic solution of terephthalic acid dihalide to an aqueous solution of an a ,b -alkyleneimine in presence of sodium hydroxide or soda to bind the hydrochloric acid. The solvent is distilled off and the product filtered off.ALSO:Pigment prints and dyeings of good fasteners are obtained on fibrous materials and foils by applying an aqueous composition comprising a pigment, a binder which is an alkali-soluble condensation resin which contains reactive carbonyl groups and is obtained from the reaction of a polyboric acid with a polyhydric alcohol, terephthalic acid bis alkylereimide and a cross-linking agent which has the formula in which R1R2R3 and R4 each represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group. After application of the aqueous composition the fabrics are dried and the pigments fixed by neutral or acid steaming at up to 100 DEG C., by steaming at superatmospheric pressure at up to 120 DEG C. or by dry heating at over 70 DEG C. The terephthalic acid bis alkylereimide compounds used are insoluble in water and in the normal solvents, and are added to the printing paste as a powder or as a paste in water or an organic medium. The pigments used may be organic or inorganic. The alkali soluble condensation resin may be incompletely condensed reaction products of polyhydric alcohols and polycarboxylic acids, the alcohols having preferably 2-6 hydroxyl groups and the acids 2-4 carboxylic groups The compositions may also contain water-soluble precondensation products preferably of phenols, melamine, urea and aldehydes. Conventional thickeners and other additions may be used. Materials printed include regenerated cellulose, acetylated cellulose, wool, silk, synthetic polyamides, polyesters, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl chloride, glass fibres, paper, card-board and asbestos.
