PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lightning position orientation method for orienting a lightning position highly accurately by determining a three-dimensional position of an electromagnetic pulse from a stepwise leader stroke inducing a return lightning stroke. SOLUTION: Electromagnetic waves radiated from lightning discharge at a plurality of spots are received in a frequency band wherein about 10 kHz is a lower limit in order to suppress an influence of a noise caused by a strong electrostatic field or the like near a lightning position and about 1 MHz is an upper limit in order to suppress interminglement of a high frequency noise caused by radio communication or the like, and a receiving time of an electromagnetic pulse following the stepwise leader stroke observed in the same polarity just before the electromagnetic pulse following the return lightning stroke is measured (S1). Then, reception times of the electromagnetic pulse following the return lightning stroke are integrated, and reception times of the electromagnetic pulse following the stepwise leader stroke are integrated, based on the result (S6), and the three-dimensional position of a radiation source of the electromagnetic pulse is operated by an arrival time difference method based on the reception time of the electromagnetic pulse at each reception spot (S7, S8), and a lower part of the position is determined to be the lightning position.
