PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the abrasion of a rope by controlling the sway of the rope due to strong wind or an earthquake, and to avoid collision and entanglement of the rope with equipment and projecting materials inside a hoistway. SOLUTION: The device 10 for controlling the rope-sway structured by laminating a viscoelastic body 12 and a restricting plate 13 is provided on an upper beam 4c of a car. This device 10 is formed with an insert hole, into which a rope holder 5 is to be inserted. The rope holder 5 is passed through the insert hole to support the car through an elastic member 8. As a result, when a main rope 2 sways by strong wind or an earthquake, the viscoelastic member 12 is deformed through the restricting plate 13, and the sway is converted to heat energy, and the sway of the rope is thereby controlled.
