The linear drive (5), e.g. hydraulic cylinder, for the rapid movement of the movable platen (2) is located between the injection units (4), which are also attached to the movable platen, and acts at the center of gravity of the movable platen (2). The platens (1, 2) are rectangular to accommodate two tools (8, 9) and preferably have six split tie rods (3) with high pressure units (11) to provide the die closing force. Alternative locations for the tie rods (3) can be arranged to suit the tool shape, e.g. for a single long tool.
