<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an article (100) including a substance (105) and plural (110) coating units (115,120,125) arranged over the substance (105). <P>SOLUTION: Each film unit (115,120,125) includes an oxygen getter layer (116) and a barrier layer(117). Embodiments of the invention introduce redundancy to enhance the robustness of a coating system. Multiple protective coating units are disposed over the substrate (105) so that failure of one of the coating units is far less likely to subject the substrate (105) to direct risk of exposure to the environment. Failure of each outer coating unit (115, 120, 125) merely exposes a pristine protective coating unit (115, 120, 125) rather than the substrate (105) or a less protective coating layer.
