PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically select whether a data communication apparatus in an image forming apparatus management system is a fax-share mode or an exclusive contract mode. SOLUTION: A control part 201 separates a FAX terminal 207 from a communication line by a switch 208 at first, and then sets a timer and sends a call signal from a call signal generator 212 to a facsimile machine 2 through a switch 208 and the FAX terminal 207. Then the control part 201 monitors the facsimile machine 2 until time-out is generated or a DC supply circuit 211 detects the off-hook of the facsimile machine 2. When the control part 201 detects the off-hook, a connection mode is switched to the fax-share mode. When time-out is detected, the switch 208 is turned to the LINE terminal 206 side (communication line 6 side) to set the connection mode to the exclusive contract mode, and then the sending of the call signal is stopped to end the operation of the facsimile machine 2.
