PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a digital recording and reproducing device which is excellent in operability, and which can always perform new low compression sound recording equivalent to the sound recording of one sheet of a reproducing medium without keeping a user waiting. SOLUTION: The digital recording and reproducing device is equipped with; a recording means which records data from a reproducing medium 1 on a recording medium 3 with a high compression rate, and also records the data on the medium 3 with a low compression rate in order to perform high quality sound recording; and a control means which controls the writing or the erasing of data to the recording medium 3 to the recording means so that the remaining capacity of the recordable area of the recording medium 3 always secures at least a capacity equivalent to the capacity of one sheet of the recording medium 3. When the remaining capacity of the recordable area of the recording medium 3 becomes equal to or lower than a capacity in which a capacity equivalent to the capacity of the one sheet of the recording medium 3 and a capacity which is to be required at the time of recording sounds equivalent to sounds of one sheet of the recording medium 3 with high compression rate are added, in the digital recording and reproducing device, low compression recorded data equal to or larger than data equivalent to data of one sheet of the recording medium 3 are listed in a desired priority order and the data from the recording medium 2 are re-recorded in the remaining area of the recording medium 3 with the high compression rate, and moreover, when low compression recording is desired, after user's approval of previous compressed data list is obtained, a new low compression sound recording area is secured by erasing only low compression data.
