PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ferritic stainless steel having increased room temperature strength by the dispersive precipitation of intermetallic compounds, and having excellent joining properties with a nonmetallic material and corrosion resistance. SOLUTION: The ferritic stainless steel contains≤0.08% C,≤3.0% Si,≤3.0% Mn,≤0.10% P,≤0.03% S, >0.6 to 5.0% Ni, 9 to 40% Cr,≤0.03% N, 0.05 to 1.0% Nb, 0.5 to 3.0% Cu and 0.5 to 5.0% Al, wherein a strengthening index X defined by X=Ni+2.25Al+1.5Cu is controlled to the range of 5.0 to 9.0. If required, the stainless steel further contains one or more kinds of metals selected from 0.05 to 0.5% Ti, 0.2 to 4.0% Mo,≤3.0% Co,≤3.0% W,≤0.5% Zr,≤0.5% V,≤1.0% Ta,≤0.1% Y,≤0.1% rare earth metals,≤0.01% B,≤0.01% Mg and≤0.01% Ca.
