PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent illegal use of data for maintaining confidentiality by automatically erasing data stored in a nonvolatile memory, and to erase the data only when required irrespective of data volume stored. SOLUTION: This nonvolatile memory device is provided with a means 11 for detecting attachment/detachment thereof from an information processing apparatus, and a timer means 12 for starting timing when the detachment is detected. When the attachment is detected, the timer means 12 is suspended, and an identification code stored before hand in the information processing apparatus is read to determine whether to coincide with a correct identification code. When the difference between these identification codes is determined, the subsequent timing operation is started. The completion of the timing operation by the timer means 12 for a prescribed time triggers an erasure instruction, thereby an erasure means 15 erases the storage contents of a memory part 16.
