There are provided a fuel cell system (10) and its start method capable of setting a start mode appropriate for accumulated energy of a secondary cell (108) upon system start without causing a start trouble. The fuel cell system (10) includes a fuel cell (12), a secondary cell (108) electrically connected to the fuel cell (12), a secondary cell accumulation amount detection unit (112) for detecting an accumulation amount of the secondary cell (108), and storage means for storing at least one threshold value for deciding the start mode of the fuel cell system (10). The fuel cell system (10) calculates accumulated energy corresponding to the accumulation amount of the secondary cell (108) and decides the start mode of the fuel cell system (10) according to the accumulated energy of the secondary cell (108) and the threshold value stored in the storage means.
