1,028,959. Fixed ammunition. UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF THE ARMY. Feb. 10, 1965 [Feb. 10, 1964], No. 5848/65. Heading F3A. A caseless fixed round of ammunition comprises a projectile 11 mounted in a moulded propellent charge 10, the projectile being aligned with a cavity 12, which regulates the ballistics of the charge and a primer being housed in a recess 13 at the base of the round. The projectile is secured in the charge by an adhesive which may be a nitrocellulose dissolved in methyl ethyl ketane and the primer may be a lead styphnate mix ignited by a conventional percussion cap. The propellant grains are bonded together by a binder such as collodion. To make the binder, 5% by weight of a low nitrogen nitrocellulose is dissolved in about 95% by weight of a 50-50 solution of ethanol and ethyl. The outer surface of the charge may be protected from heat by a coating comprising methyl methacrylate and molybdenum disulphide or graphite. The charge may be formed in a mould by introducing quantitites of propellant and binder in stages and mixing at each stage, then when the mould is full applying pressure to remove excess binder. The moulded mass is then dried before machining the recesses and securing the projectile in place.
