Materials for reversible hydrogen storage comprise alkali metal-aluminum hydride, or mixtures of aluminum with alkali metals and/or alkali metal hydrides. The alkali metal-aluminum hydride can be doped with group 3 metals or metal compounds. Materials for reversible hydrogen storage comprise alkali metal-aluminum hydride of formula M1>p(1-x)M2>pxAlH3+p, or mixtures of aluminum with alkali metals and/or alkali metal hydrides. The compound of formula (1) can be doped with group 3 metals or metal compounds. M1> = Na, K; M2> = Li, K; x= 0-0.8; and p = 1-3. An independent claim is also included for production of reversible hydrogen storage materials.
