PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor memory device and a method for arranging the word line enable signal lines.

SOLUTION: This semiconductor memory device has a word line enable driver arranged in a row decoder area outside a memory array area, and the word line enable signal line formed with a top layer among three metal layers. Moreover, the respective word line enable signal lines are coupled to only sub-word line drivers on one side of both memory cell arrays horizontally arranged. Accordingly, the word line enable signal line is arranged "in an L shape". Therefore, since the length of the word line enable signal line is short and the word line enable signal line is formed with low resistance metal of the top layer, the load of the word line enable signal line becomes small.
