PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material for an electroluminescent element suppressing excimer laser emission by self-assembly and exhibiting high luminous efficiency, to provide the organic electroluminescent element and to provide a display device and an illuminator. SOLUTION: The material for the electroluminescent element is a metal complex having a bidentate ligand represented by general formula (1) (wherein, M is a metal atom; Z11and Z12are each an O, an N or an S atom; R11to R13are each a substituent; R12is a≥3C substituent; and n1 is an integer of 1-3) or its tautomer as a partial structure.
