PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new 4,4'-diaminobiphenyl compound useful as a raw material for polyimide resins. SOLUTION: The 4,4'-diaminobiphenyl compound is represented by general formula (1) (wherein, R is a 2-6C alkyl group, an alkoxy group, a phenyl group or a phenoxy group). Specific examples of the 4,4'-diaminobiphenyl compound include 2,2'-diethyl-4,4'-diaminobiphenyl, 2,2'-di-n-propyl-4,4'-diaminobiphenyl, 2,2'-diethoxy-4,4'-diaminobiphenyl, 2,2'-di-n-propyloxy-4,4'-diaminobiphenyl, 2,2'-diphenyloxy-4,4'-diaminobiphenyl or the like.
