PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a guide device formed in a simple structure and having a small height but capable of providing such a space that particularly hard paper is not damaged between the guide device and a retaining device when the retaining device is raised. SOLUTION: This guide device synchronously feeds paper sheets on a paper discharge stand 1 disposed in the discharge area of a paper sheet processing machine in a carrying direction 4. The guide device comprises a front contact/upper contact 3 for adjusting the position of the leading edge of the paper sheets 2 at the farthest position at each time point, particularly, of a paper sheet row arranged continuously with each other overlappingly in a downward displaced state. The retaining device spreads horizontally in a transverse direction over the paper discharge stand 1 in the area of the front contact/upper contact 3 to be drivable so as to be vertically moved to the paper discharge stand 1 in synchronism with the carried paper sheets 2. The retaining device can be driven to be moved from a high position to a low position and moved reversely in the reverse route to that route in a moving route 28 approaching the paper discharge stand 1 in a direction reverse to the carrying direction 4 of the paper sheets 2.
