The device has an acoustic transducer (1) formed by an outer surface (2) of a motor vehicle component, and an electronic transducer unit (3) coupled to the component. The transducer is coupled to a control device (6) to transmit an acoustic signal as a transmitted signal for generating of sound impulses of the acoustic signal in a predetermined volume segment and to detect an acoustic echo of the transmitted signal as a received signal. An independent claim is also included for a method of determining distance of an object to a motor vehicle.
