PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress an acceleration inertia force acting on a carriage carrying a recording head, to prevent the carriage from vibrating, and to prevent a carriage driving transmitting means from tooth-skipping. SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus such as an inkjet recording apparatus which jets liquid droplets from the recording head and forms an image on a recording medium 8, is equipped with the carriage 1 carrying the recording head, and a carriage acceleration controlling means accelerating the carriage 1 to a specified speed until the recording head starts to deliver the liquid droplets, and has respectively defined printing modes to a plurality of kinds of the recording media 8. The carriage acceleration controlling means changes a carriage acceleration starting position PQ0 to "long", "normal" and "short", and also changes an acceleration ending position PQ1 to "long", "normal" and "short".
