PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a substrate for artificial leather, which is efficiently produced and, though uses a filament, has excellent surface smoothness. SOLUTION: The method for producing a substrate for artificial leather composed of a filament nonwoven fabric and a polymer elastic body comprises successively carrying out a process for producing a nonwoven fabric composed of a filament having 0.5-0.001dtex fineness, a process of continuously impregnating the nonwoven fabric with a polymer elastic body without winding the nonwoven fabric and a process for solidifying the polymer elastic body. Preferably the polymer elastic body is a polyurethane and a water-based polyurethane or the solidification process uses heated steam. Preferably the filament is a filament composed of two or more kinds of splittable components, the filament of one component at least after splitting has heat shrinkability and polymers constituting the filaments are a polyester and polyamide.
