PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control more accurately so that the luminance of a fluorescent lamp (backlight) according to surrounding brightness is realized by correcting variations in the detection output of a photosensor according to the rise/fall of environmental temperature, when adjusting the luminance of the backlight according to the detection illuminance of the photosensor by comprising the photosensor for detecting the surrounding brightness in a liquid crystal display. SOLUTION: A temperature sensor 13 for detecting the ambient temperature of the photosensor 12 is provided, and a correction value according to the detection temperature of the temperature sensor 13 is retrieved from a temperature correction table 15. Then, the detection illuminance by the photosensor 12 is corrected by the correction value retrieved from the temperature correction table 15, and the luminance of the fluorescent lamp 5 is adjusted according to the detection illuminance by the photosensor 12 after the correction.
