<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical compensation sheet to improve viewing angle display characteristics, in particular, contrast related to the viewing angle, of a TN (twisted nematic) liquid crystal display device, and to provide a polarizing plate using the optical compensation sheet and the liquid crystal display device. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device comprises a TN alignment mode liquid crystal cell and a pair of polarizing plates disposed on both sides of the liquid crystal cell. The liquid crystal display device comprises the optical compensation sheet disposed between a polarizing film of at least one of the polarizing plates and the liquid crystal cell, wherein the optical compensation sheet has at least four layers: (1) a transparent film 1 satisfying retardation values in a front face direction and film thickness direction in a specified range, (2) an optically anisotropic layer 1 having a slow phase axis substantially vertical to an absorption axis of the polarizing film, (3) a transparent film 2, and (4) an optically anisotropic layer 2 composed of a liquid crystalline compound and formed with application. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
